Imperial family visits children's park in Yokohama
+
YOKOHAMA, Dec. 19 Kyodo -
Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko on Saturday visited Kodomonokuni, a
children's park that was opened in commemoration of their marriage 50 years
ago, in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, with their children and grandchildren.
At the nearly 100-hectare park, the emperor and empress met again with a pony
that was sent by the president of Argentina as a gift in 1979, and also took a
ride on a miniature train powered by solar energy together with family members.
Prince Hisahito, the 3-year-old son of Prince Akishino and Kiko, appeared to be
intrigued by insects and asked numerous questions to a park official while
holding a ladybug and grasshopper in his palm.
Princess Aiko, 8, the only child of Crown Prince Naruhito and Crown Princess
Masako, did not participate in the family's day out due to a cold.
The emperor and empress have frequently visited the park, which was established
with congratulatory gift money received from the public for the royal wedding
and opened in 1965.
