Cambodia pilots S. Korean mobile TV service
SEOUL, Dec. 23 (Yonhap) -- Cambodia has launched a pilot program for South
Korea's homegrown broadcasting technology, enabling users to watch TV programs
and other entertainment content on handheld mobile devices, South Korea's telecom
regulator said Wednesday.
The Korea Communications Commission (KCC) held a ceremony in Phnom Penh Tuesday
with Cambodia's state-run broadcaster TVK to mark the start of terrestrial
digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) services in the Southeast Asian country,
the KCC said.
South Korea was the first country in the world to set the DMB service in motion
in 2005.
The Cambodian government plans to consider converting the pilot scheme into a
full-scale service in the first half of next year. It earlier signed a memorandum
of understanding with the South Korean regulator to promote cooperation in DMB
services.
The KCC is also working toward launching a full-scale DMB service in Malaysia and
Egypt after conducting test runs in the countries last year.
