FIFTY HOUSES DESTROYED IN MAJALAYA FLASH FLOOD
Bandung, Indonesia, Dec 25 (ANTARA) - Fifty houses in Majalaya and Ibun subdistricts in Bandung district, West Java, were destroyed after a flash flood swept through the area on Thursday night.
The flood triggered by the overflowing of Citarum River affected Majalaya, Paseh and Ibun subdistricts, spokesman for the Garda Caah voluntary group Riki Waskito said on Friday.
Eight of the destroyed houses were found at Sukamaju village in Majalaya subdistrict and 42 at Tanggulun village in Ibun subdistrict, he said.
The flood also caused minor damage to 28 houses at Sukamaju village and 250 houses at Tanggulun village, he said.
Riki said a mosque collapsed and a factory was damaged by the flood waters.
While the flood waters in several areas began to recede on Friday afternoon, many residents were still worried about another flood.
The flood prompted 470 people to move to safer areas. However, some of them have returned home.
"Most of the flood evacuees have returned home as the flood waters began to recede. Only a few residents are being sheltered at the Leuwidulang elementary school" he said.
On Friday afternoon, many residents were busy clearing their houses of trash left behind by the flood waters.
The flood followed three hours of rains in Bandung district and environs on Thursday night. About 4,000 houses in the subdistricts of Majalaya, Ibun and Paseh were flooded. Majalaya subdistrict was the hardest hit by the floods.***
