ALLEGATION LINKING PRESIDENT TO CENTURY POLITICALLY MOTIVATED: ALIE
Gresik, Indonesia, Dec 25 (ANTARA) - Allegations that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is involved in the Bank Century scandal is only a politically-motivated move which could not be proven, House Speaker Marzuki Alie said.
"The allegation is only a politically motivated opinion as if the president was trying to protect corrupt officials, banking criminals and the their kind," Marzuki Alie said here on Friday.
Alie, who is former secretary general of the Democratic Party, was here to attend a gathering with Muslim clerics of the Al Muniroh Islamic Boarding School.
He said that Yudhoyono who is the chief patron of the Democratic Party, was not at all involved in the Century Bank scandal. "The president has nothing to do with the bank case, let alone if it is said that the bailout fund to Bank Century happened to flow into the Democratic Party. It is a big lie," he said.
A special House inquiry committee is now probing into an alleged violation in the disbursement of a bailout for Bank Century amounting to Rp6.7 trillion.
According to an investigative auditing of the State Audit Board (BPK), there are indications of irregularities in the bailout.
The government decided to bailout the bank in late 2008 when it collapsed after its owner transferred its assets amounting to Rp11 trillion overseas.***
