Prince Khalid bin Sultan Research Chair of KSU Wins Gold Medal from British Invention Exhibition

Riyadh, December 26, 2009, SPA -- Prince Khalid bin Sultan Chair for Water
Research, an affiliated of King Saud University has won a gold medal from 9th
British Invention Exhibition for a joint research between the Chair and Malaysia's
Petro University.

The research dealt with treatment of water resulting from extraction of oil
estimated at about 6 to 10 barrels of water for every barrel of extracted oil . The
water contains a high rate of salinity, oils, organic acids, heavy metals, and
radioactive particles, which represent serious risks to sources of surface water
and groundwater if left untreated.

The treatment focuses on adapting micro-organisms capable of breaking and
dismantling these pollutants in an environment of high salinity, and then filtering
them in minute membranes.

The Chair's Supervisor Dr. Walid bin Muhammad Zahid, has expressed his thanks to
Prince Khalid bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz , Assistant Minister of Defense and Aviation
and Inspector General for Military Affairs, who finances the Chair, for his keen
interest in national scientific research and water issues in the Arab world.
