MINISTER SUPPORTS NU'S STANCE ON PRIVATE MATTERS IN INFOTAINMENT

Bogor, Indonesia, Dec 26 (ANTARA) - Religious Affairs Minister Suryadharma Ali said he supported the stance of the Nahdlatul Ulama organization that private matters may not be used for entertainment.

"Personally. I support NU's stance that information entertainment programs about gossip that tell about private matters of family or personal affairs need not be supported," he said after meeting with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the latter's private residence in Cikeas, Bogor, West Java, on Saturday, to report preparations for joint Christmas 2009 celebration.

He said all parties based on universal values must understand that a person's private matters are not fit for public consumption.

"Moreover, one has to run to avoid being asked about one's private problems. I think we all can understand that (such is not appropriate) in view of universal values," he said.

Institutionally, he said however that the religious affairs ministry would not comment further regarding what it would do to follow up the NU's stance.

This issue came up following a clash between artist Luna Maya and info-tainment reporters over a twit the former wrote the reporters considered degrading them.
