VP LEADS TSUNAMI COMMEMORATION IN ACEH

Banda Aceh, Indonesia, Dec 26 (ANTARA) - Vice President Boediono led the commemoration of the fifth anniversary of tsunami disaster in Aceh on Saturday.

The disaster that happened on December 26, 2004 leaving more than 200,000 people dead has served as a momentum for the rise of the people of Aceh to a better future, Boediono said in his speech at the commemoration centered at the ferry port area in Ulee Lhue, Banda Aceh.

"Five years have passed since the tsunami. People and the regional as well as central governments with support from the international community have helped rebuild Aceh in a peaceful atmosphere," he said.

"Now the Aceh people have already risen towards a better future. The people of Aceh have shown their spirit to rise. Their spirit needs to be followed by people throughout Indonesia," he said.

He said although hundreds of thousands of lives have been taken the people of Aceh had never lost hope. "What we have achieved in the past five years is the result of the patience of us particularly the Aceh people," he said.

He said the government and other components in the world had shown strong solidarity to rebuild the province.

Vice President Boediono drew an applause from thousands of people attending the commemoration when he quoted a local saying "Nyoe ka mufakat, lampoh jirat tapeugara" (after deliberations are made even a cemetary may be auctioned off).

On the occasion Boediono also reminded the people that Aceh's development towards better welfare and justice could only be achieved with science.

He said it was rare for a nation to grow well if it only relies on natural resources.

In view of that "it is important especially for Aceh to pay attention to human resources development," he said.

Boediono also emphasized the importance of safeguarding the peace and security that had been achieved. "I saw the heterogeneity of the Aceh people as proof of the people's openness. The peace will become a strong foundation for build Aceh to be better in the future," he said.

He reminded that it took tens of years to build peace but it would only take a day to damage it and therefore "anyone disturbing the peace is the same as destructing the nature," he said.***
