KPK MOST COMPETENT BODY TO HANDLE CENTURY CASE :MUHAMMADIYAH CHIEF
Gresik, Indonesia, Dec 26 (ANTARA) - Muhammadiyah Chairman Din Syamsudin said the most competent body to unravel the Bank Century scandal now was the Corruption Eradication Commission (KP) rather than the police or the public prosecutor's office.
"I hope this case is settled through a legal process, and to do this, the KPK is the most comptetent body," Din said when attending a function to mark the 100th anniversary of Muhammadiyah at the Muhammadiyah Propagation Building here Saturday.
He said the KPK was the most competent body to solve the Bank Century case because the people no longer trusted the police and public prosecutor's office. Still, the KPK would have to work conscientiously and uphold strict standards of honesty.
Din also called for a speedy settlement of the Bank Century case arguing that if it dragged on over a long period of time, the culprits would have a chance to make all sorts of efforts to derail the investigations.
"I am afraid, the suspected culprits will use the time to destroy evidence, documents or exert pressure to cover up their tracks," he said.
The Muhammadiyah leader also hoped the ongoing efforts to settle the Bank Century case politically would be concluded rapidly and conclusively.
"I do hope the House Bank Century Inquiry Committee will not bog down mid-way or before acheiving anything. The House must show its ability to act as an institution representing the people," he said.
According to Din, the Bank Century case suggested the commission of "crimes against the people to serve certain people's political interests."
"The Bank Century case amounts to premeditated robbery of the people's money," he said.
Commenting on the appearance of groups in society defending the persons suspected of involvement in the Bank Century bailout scandal, Din said, if their public demonstrations had been orchestrated, it means the suspected persons were afraid.
"Yet, if they are really not involved, they don't need to be afraid. If they are, it makes us even more suspicious," Din said. ***
