S. Korea to open bidding to develop wetland into farming area

JEONJU, South Korea, Dec. 27 (Yonhap) -- A South Korean state-run company said Sunday it will open bidding early this week to firms interested in developing a massive section of reclaimed wetland on the west coast of South Korea into farmland.

Korea Rural Community Corp. will open bidding Monday for firms to build a dike
49.5 kilometers long in the first stage of farmland construction on the
Saemangeum wetland, which covers 400 square kilometers -- about seven times the
size of Manhattan.
The government plans to turn 30 percent of the wetland into a farming area as
part of a coastal tideland development project worth an estimated 22 trillion won
(US$18.7 billion).
The remaining 70 percent is planned to be developed into industrial zones,
including a new harbor and airport, according to the government plan.
Initial construction, to be completed by 2015, will cost 719.8 billion won,
according to officials at the state-run company.
