S. Korean airport heightens security for flights bound for U.S.
INCHEON, Dec. 27 (Yonhap) -- Incheon airport, South Korea's main gateway, has
begun to step up security measures on passengers traveling to the United States
following an attempted terrorist attack on a U.S.-bound international flight last
week, its officials said Sunday.
Incheon International Airport said security has been tightened at the request of
U.S. authorities to check passengers and baggage in the customs, immigration and
quarantine areas.
The move comes two days after a man tried to set off a small explosive aboard a
Delta-Northwest Airlines flight in what U.S. authorities consider a failed
terrorist attack. The flight originating in Amsterdam was bound for Detroit.
South Korean airlines are also applying extra security checks on passengers at
boarding gates, airport officials said.
Friday's incident has sparked a major international terrorism investigation, and
new rules quickly put into place are changing air traffic routines, according to
media reports.
