S. Korean consortium in UAE nuclear deal at a glance
SEOUL, Sept. 27 (Yonhap) -- The following is a snapshot of major companies
belonging to a consortium led by the state-run Korean Electric Power Corp.,
picked Sunday by the United Arab Emirates as the winner of a bid to build four
nuclear reactors in the Middle Eastern country.
Doosan Heavy Industries Co.:
Over the past 20 years, Doosan has been one of the world's major suppliers of
parts and materials for nuclear reactors.
Since building the Yeonggwang Nuclear Power Plants 1 and 2 in South Korea in
1976, Doosan has so far built a total of 15 nuclear power reactors while six more
are currently being constructed by the firm.
Doosan is also devoted to developing solutions for services, nuclear waste
solutions and other programs for research and development.
In May last year, Doosan signed a memorandum of understanding with China National
Nuclear Corp. to forge cooperation in nuclear reactors in China.
The UAE deal is expected to call for Doosan to build nuclear reactors and steam
generators.
Hyundai Engineering and Construction Co.:
Hyundai, which will likely build 55 percent of the four nuclear power plants in
the UAE, built South Korea's first nuclear reactor, the Gori Nuclear Power Plant,
in 1971.
Since then, Hyundai has built 12 of the 20 nuclear power plants currently in
operation in South Korea.
In 2003, Hyundai won an order to build the main facilities of the New Gori
Nuclear Power Plant from Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Corp.
Hyundai is the nation's only company capable of building pressurized water
reactor and pressurized heavy water reactors.
Samsung C&T Corp.:
Samsung, which will likely build 45 percent of the nuclear power plants in UAE,
gained its reputation as a builder of nuclear power plants after it completed
building the Uljin Nuclear Power Plants 5 and 6 in 2004 and 2005, respectively.
Currently, Samsung is building the New Wolseong Nuclear Power Plant 1 and 2 in
South Korea.
The company's building and plant works included Burj Dubai, a super-tall
skyscraper under construction in Dubai, the Incheon Grand Bridge and a high-speed
rail way in Taiwan.
