The Tendulkar Committee found that if the new criteria
were to be plotted against the 1993 data, about 45 per cent of
Indians were under BPL in that year. That figure, would be
down to 37 per cent in 2004-05.

The Prime Minister said since the period of rapid
economic growth was largely after 2004-05, it would be only
through the next estimates of 2009-10 that the real impact on
poverty would be known.
He said reforms have not led to any adverse impact on the
country's poor, rather the number of people below the poverty
line has declined.
Singh emphasised on sustained economic growth, which, he
said, is required to improve the standard of living. "Our poor
are still too poor and we need to do much more to improve
their standard of living...To this end, the economy has to
grow fast enough to create new job opportunities at a rate
faster than the growth of labour force," he said. PTI PDM
