Resolution draft on reforming national committee for refugees ratified

SANA'A, Dec.09 (Saba) - The cabinet ratified on Tuesday a republican =
resolution draft on reforming the
national committee for refugees' affairs and identifying its functions, =
submitted by Foreign Minister.
The cabinet directed to complete the needed constitutional procedures =
for issuing the resolution.
The first article of the resolution included forming the committee, =
chaired by Deputy Foreign Minister and the membership of =
Undersecretaries of Ministries of Interior,
Human Rights, Endowments and Guidance, Public Health and Population and =
Local Administration.
The committee's membership also included the Central Agency for =
Political Security, the National Security, Head of the Immigration, =
Passports and Citizenship Authority,
Under-Secretary General of Yemen Red Crescent Society and =
representatives of the Presidency Office and the cabinet's General =
Assembly.
The second article of the resolution identified the committee functions =
in setting up the general policies and the plans and programs relating =
to the asylum issues in Yemen
under the 1951 Convention and the 1967 Protocol relating to the status =
of refugees.
It also pinpointed the committee tasks in supervision of all forms of =
cooperation with the international and regional organizations concerned =
with the asylum and migration
issues as well as following up the refugees' conditions and approving =
the mechanisms associated with the institutional and technical aspects =
relating to receiving refugees,
organizing and managing their affairs.
The Yemeni government estimates over 800,000 Somali refugees are =
currently in the country.
According to UNHCR's statistics, more than 74 thousand African people =
moved to Yemen in 2009 with an increase of 50 per cent compared with the =
year before.
Latest Statistics issued by the migration authority have revealed that =
the majority of the refugees are Somalis who reached over 165,000 =
persons with 109,000 males and 47,000
females during 2009.
