MPR CHIEF SEES OFF GUR DUR'S BODY
Jakarta, Dec 31 (ANTARA) - Chairman of the People`s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Taufiq Kiemas saw off the body of former president Abdurrahman Wahid on Thursday morning for burial in his hometown of Jombang, East Java, in the afternoon.
The body of Gus Dur, as the former president was popularly called, was seen off in a military ceremony at his Ciganjur residence in South Jakarta with Major Istono as an inspector.
Gus Dur`s body was later taken by an ambulance to the city`s Halim Perdanakusuma military airport from where he would be flown to Jombang by an Indonesian Air Force Hercules C1341 plane.
Among those seeing off Gus Dur`s body were Chairman of the People`s Conscience (Hanura) Party Wiranto, Information and Communications Minister Tifatul Sembiring and a number of lawmakers.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is expected to lead the funeral of the late statesman in the family grave at Tebu Ireng Cemetery in Jombang.
Gus Dur died during medication at the city`s Cipto Mangunkusumo hospital after suffering from complications caused by heart disease, kidney disorders and diabetes for years. He was 69.
Born in Denanyar village, Jombang district, East Java, on August 4, 1940, he is survived by his wife and four daughters.
He served as the country`s fourth president from October 20, 1999 to August 24, 2001.
The government on Wednesday night declared a week of national mourning on the demise of the former president.
"I call on the entire Indonesian nation to hoist the Red and White flag half-mast for a week starting tomorrow (Thursday) to mourn over the demise of the country`s fourth president KH Abdurrahman Wahid," Yudhoyono said during a brief press conference.
