Hyundai Heavy says sales rise almost 7 pct this year
SEOUL, Dec. 31 (Yonhap) -- Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., the world's biggest shipbuilder, said Thursday its full-year sales rose 6.9 percent to 21.3 trillion won (US$18 billion).
But new orders dropped 61 percent to $10.6 billion, the company said in a
regulatory filing.
Hyundai Heavy's experience was part of a worldwide trend. Global contracts for
new vessels in the first 11 months of the year plunged 83 percent from a year
earlier, according to London-based market researcher Clarkson Plc.
South Korea, home to seven of the world's top 10 shipyards, has clinched
record-high orders in the past few years on strong demand for crude carriers and
offshore exploration equipment amid lofty oil prices.
But orders for new vessels have sunk since the third quarter of last year, as the
credit crisis and subsequent global recession have prodded companies to postpone
delivery dates or cancel orders.
