Gov't sets guideline on heavy-metal levels in flour, wine
SEOUL, Dec. 31 (Yonhap) -- National health authorities said Thursday they plan to start regulating the content of heavy metals in flour and wine to make sure the increasingly popular foodstuffs are safe.
In a proposal to update its food guidelines, the Korea Food & Drug Administration
set a ceiling of 0.2 part per million for lead in wine and the same amount of
cadmium and lead in flour.
The administration said the addition is aimed at increasing the safety of those
items, which are gaining in popularity as South Koreans adopt more Western
tastes.
Also included in the proposal are limits for toxic mold in dried fruit and
cereals. The administration said it will collect public opinions to come up with
a final guideline by Jan. 20.
