Multi-tiered security apparatus functioning at major airports
New Delhi, Dec 29 (PTI) A multi-tiered security apparatus
is functioning at major airports across India as part of
efforts to beef up vigil at all aviation installations, days
after an attempted attack on a US airliner.
"All our security systems are in place and fully geared to
meet any threat. All personnel have been told to maintain
heightened vigil at all airports across the country and be
more careful," official sources told PTI.
The beefing up of security comes against the backdrop of
Friday's failed attempt to attack a Northwest Airlines'
aircraft bound for Detroit.
The sources said the top brass of the Bureau of Civil
Aviation Security (BCAS) was having a re-look at the present
security systems and regulations, "but no further measures are
being put in place as of now."
In order to do away with several layers of security and
aviation bureaucracy, only one body, the Central Committee,
would be set up urgently with identified officials to deal
with any emergency.
The Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) have already been
streamlined and procedures put in place for faster and
effective response, the sources said.
All major international airports have heightened security
measures and introduced several layers of checks and frisking,
resulting in long queues and inconvenience to passengers,
mostly holiday travellers. (More) PTI ARC
