TNI READY TO ASSIST POLICE IN SECURING NEW YEAR'S EVE
Jakarta, Dec 31 (ANTARA) - The National Defense Forces (TNI) has put all its personnel in a atate of readiness to assist the police in anticipating possible terrorist attacks on New Year's eve, a spokesman said. .
"We are coordinating with the police and have prepared our personnel to help the police in ensuring security during the year's change-over, especially in anticipating possible terrorist attacks," TNI spokesman Commodore Sagom Tamboen tiold Antara here Thursday.
A state of preparedness has been declared for all TNI units down to the lowest levels in the regions to antcipate all eventualities during the last night of the year and on new year's day,Sagom said.
Sagom's statemet followed an electronic letter from the US embassy in Jakarta mentioning the possibility of a terrorist attack during the New Year's eve ini Bali.
The letter was addressed to all US nationals in Indonesia, in Bali in particular.
In the letter, Bali Governor Mangku Pastika was quoted as saying there were indications that a terrorist attack may occur in Bali on New Year's eve. The warning had also been disseminated by the Bali tourism office.
US nationals were warned extremists would possibly target establishments like hotels, cafes, shopping centers or other places frequented by or accommodating foreigners in Bali, and advised to be alert and extra careful.
Meanwhile, the head of the National Police's public relations division, Soelistyo Ishak , said the police had already launched their "Operation Candle" which included preparations to deal with "various possibilities" during New Year's eve and the following day. 2010.
"We hope the indications of a poossible terrorist attack will not prove true. Nonetheless, we remain alert and ready to face all possibilities through our Operation Candle carried out throghout Indonesia," he said.
