Bone chilling cold in north India, seasons lowest in Amritsar
New Delhi, Dec 31 (PTI) Bone chilling conditions Thursday
prevailed in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh, with Amritsar
recording the season's lowest temperature of minus 0.6 degrees
Celsius, even as three persons died due to cold wave in Uttar
Pradesh.
In the national capital Delhi, which continued to
experience biting cold, people expected to usher in a warmer
New Year with the Met office predicting the minimum
temperature to be around 7 deg C. The minimum temperature
Thursday was 6 deg C, against 5.2 deg C Wednesday.
While the minimum temperature in Amritsar, the border
district of Punjab, was five degrees below normal, Ambala in
Haryana shivered at 0.8 C, dipping by six degrees below
normal. Chandigarh also witnessed mercury dropping by three
degrees below normal with 3.4 C.
In Uttar Pradesh, two persons--a middle-aged rickshaw
puller and a 10-year-old boy, died due to cold wave in
Gorakhpur which recorded a minimum temperature of 4.9 deg C.
A 30-year-old man died in Muzaffarnagar district.
The cold wave further tightened its grip in Jammu and
Kashmir where mercury registered a sharp drop in most places.
The minimum temperature in Leh slipped to minus 15 deg
C against minus 9.4 deg C yesterday, while it dipped to minus
14.8 deg C in Kargil district.
Pahalgam in the Valley witnessed the coldest night of the
season so far as the minimum temperature touched minus 7.2
deg C. Srinagar recorded a low of minus 4.0 deg C. However, in
Jammu mercury rose marginally during night recording a low of
5.2 deg C against 4.4 deg C Wednesday. (MORE) PTI
