Lee greets 2010 with higher approval ratings

By Shin Hae-in
SEOUL, Jan. 1 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Myung-bak's approval ratings have
surpassed 50 percent for the first time in over six months, local surveys showed
Friday, indicating the conservative leader was winning back public trust after
two choppy years in office.
Some 51.6 percent of South Koreans support Lee's current economic and social
policies, according to a survey of 1,000 adults conducted by the country's major
vernacular daily Donga Ilbo and Korea Research Center.
It is the first time Lee's approval rating has entered the 50 percent-range since
April last year.
Lee's approval rating hit as low as 31.6 percent in a poll taken by the
right-leaning newspaper on June 2, shortly after his immediate predecessor, Roh
Moo-hyun, jumped to his death amid a government-led corruption probe.
The newspaper analyzed that Lee's increased popularity was largely due to South
Korea's stabilizing economic situation since the global financial meltdown last
fall and the clinching of a US$40 billion deal by Korean companies to build
nuclear power plants in the United Arab Emirates.
Some 42.4 percent responded negatively toward Lee's policies in the survey
released by Donga Ilbo on Friday.
President Lee, who won a landslide victory in the December 2007 elections with
nearly 50 percent of the vote, saw his young presidency rattled by the
U.S.-sparked financial crisis which hit hard on local economy and his
controversial decision to reopen the local market to American beef.
Other polls showed similar sentiments.
In a survey conducted by the centrist Hankook Ilbo and Media Research on Dec.
26-27, up to 49.8 percent supported the Lee administration while 44.6 percent
expressed disapproval.
Some 49.6 percent approved of Lee's administration in a poll taken by Seoul
Shinmun and Ace Research Center on Dec. 26-27, while 44.3 percent answered
negatively.
In the surveys conducted by the ruling Grand National Party and polling group
Real Meter, Lee's approval rating soared to 51.9 percent and 53.1 percent,
respectively.
