Samsung Electronics to beef up health, software biz: CEO

By Lee Youkyung
SEOUL, Jan. 4 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Electronics Co. plans to make its healthcare
business among the company's key growth engines for the next decade, its top
executive said Monday.

Choi Gee-sung, Samsung's chief executive officer, also stressed the importance of
nurturing its software business to ensure the world's leading electronics maker
stays on a strong footing in coming years.
"Our new business areas, such as health, environment and lifecare will be Samsung
Electronics' two major business along with infotainment in 10 years," Choi said
at a ceremony to mark the start of the company's this year business, according to
a press release. Choi was named the South Korean company's new CEO in the latest
reshuffle.
Choi told his employees that software and content will increasingly become
significant for hardware and electronics makers.
"Our business should become more friendly to software and contents," Choi was
quoted as saying.
Samsung, also the world's largest TV maker and second-largest mobile handset
maker, disclosed its first mobile operating system "bada" in December that
analysts deemed to be a move to take a larger share in the fast-growing
smartphone market.
He also urged his employees to take benefits from Samsung's multiple business
areas, ranging from electronics parts, such as memory chips and flat panels, and
to consumer electronics, such as televisions and mobile handsets.
