Seoul beefs up safety measures ahead of G-20 summit
SEOUL, Jan. 4 (Yonhap) -- Police and law enforcement agencies will strengthen
efforts to tighten security and establish social order ahead of the G-20 summit
scheduled to be held in Seoul later this year, officials said Monday.
"We will firmly deal with illegal collective actions to reinforce the social
order," Justice Minister Lee Kwi-nam said, kick-off meeting with his ministry
officials for the year.
"The ministry is making efforts to intensify measures to regulate illegal
election activities to secure fair election in June local elections as well as
establish the level of the social order for G-20 summit to be held in November,"
Lee said.
The November summit is expected to bring together over 10,000 people, including
some 35 heads of state and international organizations, making it the largest or
the most significant event ever to be held in the country, according to the G-20
organizing committee here.
Meanwhile, the National Police Agency (NPA) Monday announced that it has launched
a special security force that will be mobilized to provide tight security for the
leaders of G-20 member countries before and during the summit.
The special security force will closely cooperate with related agencies to
establish multi-dimensional security to properly cope with any possible accidents
or terror attacks at major meeting venues or public places, NPA officials said.
