TWO BANTAENG FARMERS TO PARTCIPATE IN JAPANESE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
Bantaeng, S Sulawesi, Jan 4 (ANTARA) - Two farmers from Bantaeng distict , South Sulawesi, namely Budi from Baruga village and Arafah from Kaloling village have won an opportunty to take part in a one-year internship program in Japan, a local official said.
"Both farmers who will leave for Japan in mid February 2010 will learn about the development of rice and maize for one year at the expense of the Japanese government," Bantaeng District Chief HM Nurdin Abdullah said here on Monday.
The two farmers would work and stay in Nigata prefecture.
"Hopefully, the two farmers, after returning home, can develop their own regions ," Abdullah said. In Japan the two would stay at a local farmer`s house to make them mingle with Japanese people in an effort to develop agriculture.
Abdullah said if the two farmers gained success, the apprenticeship program in Japan would be done every year in order to improve local farmers` way of thinking.
The mastery of agricultural engineering is badly needed because in the future Bantaeng is expected to become a seedling development center.
Such effort is made due to the limited farmland in Bantaeng district, which is about 120 kilometers south of Makassar, capital of South Sulawesi province.
Bantaeng province was successful in increasing rice production since implementing the Legowo-21 growing system which has made the local rice production drastically increased from four tons to 8 till 12 tons per hectare of rice field.
