KEPCO develops battery chargers for electric vehicles
By Nam Kwang-sik
SEOUL, Jan. 5 (Yonhap) -- Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO), South Korea's
state-run power company, said Tuesday that it has developed battery chargers for
electric vehicles (EVs) to be slated for launch in 2011 by local car makers.
In October 2009, KEPCO signed an initial deal with the country's Hyundai Motor
Group to jointly develop electric vehicles and battery chargers by 2010. Hyundai
Motor Group plans to start selling electric vehicles from 2011.
Electric vehicles are propelled solely by electric power, while hybrid electric
vehicles are powered by both batteries and gasoline.
KEPCO signed a deal in December last year with Tokyo Electric Power Co., Japan's
largest utility, to develop preemptive global standards for EV battery chargers.
