GREENPEACE : STOP ALL TREE LOGGING ACTIVITY IN 2010
Jakarta, Jan 5 (ANTARA) - Greenpeace expects the Indonesian government to start realizing its commitment to reduce national carbon emissions by stopping all tree logging activity in 2010.
"The government should start by stopping all tree logging activities this year," Greenpeace`s Southeast Asia campaigner Bustar Maitar said here on Tuesday.
Bustar added the government must also revoke all land-use permits given to companies, especially on peat moss and forest areas in the country.
Thereby, Bustar argued, the government would live up to its commitment to lower carbon emissions by 26 percent by 2020.
"Stopping the damage to peat moss and forest areas is the most effective way to reduce the green house effect in the world," he said.
Bustar added the government would not need an excessive amount of money to stop tree logging activities. Therefore, the government could allocate the climate change litigation fund given by international organizations to people`s empowerment programs.
"We will find a way to reduce the greenhouse effect in a cheaper way so that the rest of the international funding can be used to finance activities to empower local people," he said.
