CONSTANT INCREASE IN PAPUA`S RICE PRODUCTION
Jayapura, Jan 6 (ANTARA) - Papua province has seen a steady increase in its rice production since 2005 with the figure for 2009 expected to reach 95,666 tons, the region's chief statistician said.
Giving an overview of production of various food crops in Indonesia's most eastern province, the head of the Papua branch of the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), Djarot Soetanto, said here Wednesday, unhulled paddy production in 2009 was estimated at 95,666 tons compared with 60,810 tons in 2005, an increase of 57.32 percent in four years.
The production increase was due to an expansion in the rice cultivation area from 18,483 hectares in 2005 to 25,467 hectares in 2009 or an addition of 37.79 percent.
Besides, he said, productivity had also gone up from 32.90 quintals per hectare to 37.56 quintals per hectare or a gain of 14.16 percent.
The biggest rice producing region in Papua province was Merauke district, Djarot said.
