RI TO INVOLVE JAPAN IN PALAPA RING PROJECT :MINISTER

Jakarta, Jan 6 (ANTARA) - Communication and Information Minister Tifatul Sembiring said the Indonesian government will involve Japan in its Palapa Ring fiber-optic project.

"We cannot deal with information and communication technology (ICT) on our own, we must connect ourselves with other countries, and one of them is Japan," Tifatul said, after a meeting with Matsamitsu Naito, Senior Vice Minister for Internal and Communications affairs at Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, here Wednesday.

Tifatul said Japan had much experience in ICT matters and was many steps ahead of Indonesia in the field.

Therefore, he said, it would be good if Japan was involved in a number of ICT projects in Indonesia, including the Palapa Ring project.

"If the Mataram-Kupang Palapa Ring can be connected with Australia it will be very good, and Japan has also said it will connect them to us," he said.

Indonesia's ICT projects would in the future also require cooperation with other countries, including in the human resources field with Japan which according to the minister was more advanced in the mastery of ICT.

Thus, Tifatul said, Indonesia would further invite the Japanese side as a follow up to the initial meeting as well as to participate in a tender on the Palapa Ring Project.

Meanwhile, Masamitsu Naito said Japan was ready to work together with Indonesia, especially in the field of ICT.

"The cooperation that we discussed at our meeting will be in the field of technology and human resources development, the use of ICT technology in solving social problems such as disaster management and climate change," he said.

In addition, Japan would also invite Indonesia to attend an APEC TELMIN 2010 event in Japan in October this year, Masamitsu said. ***
