Cheil Industries wins lawsuit against U.S. Cabot Microelectronics

SEOUL, Jan. 7 (Yonhap) -- Cheil Industries Inc., the textile unit of South Korea's
Samsung Group, said Thursday that it has won a patent infringement lawsuit lodged
by U.S. firm Cabot Microelectronics Corp.

Last month, the Seoul High Court dismissed an appeal filed by Cabot, the world's
leading supplier of chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) slurries for
semiconductor wafers, against Cheil Industries, accusing the South Korean company
of violating its patent on the CMP slurries, Cheil Industries said in a
statement.
The appellate court ruled the South Korean company did not infringe on the patent
of the U.S. firm as the technologies for the CMP slurries made by Cheil
Industries are available to everyone.
In July 2007, Cabot Microelectronics filed a suit with a Seoul District Court
against Cheil Industries for the alleged violation of its patent.
Cabot and Japan's Hitachi Ltd. have dominated the CMP slurry global market, while
Cheil Industries entered the market in 2003 with the help of Samsung Electronics
Co.
