S. Korea recalls fake frozen Pollock entrails from China
SEOUL, Jan. 7 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's food safety agency has ordered a recall
of "fake" frozen Pollock entrails from local markets as the material, widely
served as a popular side dish here, was found to be made from catfish intestines,
officials said Thursday.
After being fully removed and cleaned, Pollock entrails are mixed with salt and
served as a side dish in South Korea, where they are thought to help stimulate
appetites. Catfish intestines are similar to Pollock entrails in appearance but
are much cheaper.
The Korea Food and Drug Administration said it ordered a recall of the fake
products imported from China last Thursday after finding that they were made from
cheaper catfish intestines.
The products were made by the Chinese company Yantai Zhaoyang Aquatic Products
Co. and imported and circulated by a local distributor. Their production dates
were either Feb. 25 or July 11 of last year, the agency said.
According to the nation's customs office, around 38,971 kilograms of such fake
frozen Pollock entrails were found last November. Of the total, only 6,124
kilograms have been recalled from store shelves. Currently, about 33 tons of the
product still remain on the market.
