BALI TO FACE AFTA WITH PRODUCTS' QUALITY IMPROVEMENT :GOVERNOR
Denpasar, Bali, Jan 7 (ANTARA) - In the face of the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) Bali will emphasize improvement of the quality of its tourism products, small industries and handicraft household products, the island`s top administrator said.
"With high quality products, Bali will be ready to compete in the free trade era nationally and internationally," said Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika here on Thursday.
The governor made the statement after handing 369 approved lists of budget-funded projects (DIPA) under the 2010 State Budget worth a total of Rp8.7 trillion to district- and city-level regional development work units (SKPDs) from throughout Bali.
The governor said that Bali`s mainstay in the competition was still in the tourism field.
The mainstay was supported by small industries and household handicraft products, from the touch of skillful Balinese craftsmen, to products of the agricultural sector.
Pastika said AFTA should not be anticipated with anger or lamentation but with a determination and hard work to improve the quality of the region`s products.
Bali`s beautiful natural sceneries and unique culture and arts were its main capital to win the competition in the free trade era, he said.
"So we do not need to be angry or resentful nor ask for protection. Yes, we will face it by improving the quality of our products," he said.
The governor said improvement of the quality of Bali`s` human resources could be achieved through various efforts, including education and training which would change people`s mental attitude.
"What needs to be addressed now is the concerning conditions of the environment, the littering problem, traffic jams, and power blackouts," he said.
All these problems were what tourists in Bali were most frequently complaining about, Pastika said, adding it was hoped they could be resolved in the near future so that Bali`s competitiveness as a torist destination could be further enhanced.
"We also need to improve the management of our assets as a tourism destination, including our infrastrctures," he said.
In addition, Bali must also raise the quality of the products of its small, household and handicraft industries, in order to win the free-trade competition, he said.
