RI TO FOCUS ON SUPPORTING ASEAN COMMUNITY 2015, MINISTER
Jakarta, Jan 8 (ANTARA) - Indonesia will focus on enhancing the realization of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Community by the year of 2015, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Marty Natalegawa, said here on Friday during his yearly press conference speech here on Friday.
"ASEAN countries must take concrete actions towards the objective to realise ASEAN Community 2015," the minister said.
Marty said ASEAN Community would ensure the peace, stability and prosperity within Southeast Asia countries. The realization of the 2015's goal, he added, would also open the opportunity for East Asia Community establishment which had been discussed since last year.
"ASEAN Community will be the main pillar for the formation of bigger multilateral organizations such as East Asia Community," said Marty.
However, Marty emphasized the importance of national awareness toward any regional cooperations that Indonesia could fully use the community building in ASEAN and East Asia for the benefit of its people.
Before, Indonesian economist Sri Adiningsih said Indonesia must not open its domestic market widely but enhance productivity and competitiveness in the face of the ASEAN Free Trade Area in 2010.
"Indonesia`s obligation is not to open its domestic market but to improve productivity and competitiveness," said the chairwoman of the Indonesian Economics Scholars Association (ISEI)`s fiscal and monetary coordination focus group.
Adiningsih said Indonesia could still negotiate the terms for AFTA`s implementation to avoid being disadvantaged by it.
Indonesia`s productivity and competitiveness were not so bad at all because they rose by 1.5 percent from 2000 to 2008, Adiningsih said. "But compared with China`s which increased 4 percent, the figure means nothing," she said.
She said Indonesia had a trade surplus with China in 2007 but this turned into a deficit in 2008.
Based on her studies in Surakarta, Adiningsih also mentioned that a number of small businessmen in the region must face the bitter reality of not being able to compete with imported goods from China causing them to be put out of business.***
