KALLA: BANK CENTURY`S FAILURE OF NO SYSTEMIC CONSEQUENCE
Jakarta, Jan 8 (ANTARA) - Former vice president Jusuf Kalla has deplored recent statements by some former Bank Indonesia (BI) or central bank officials that failure to rescue problematic Bank Century in the past would have had a systemic effect.
"The Bank Century case was robbery. So those who supported the bank, have helped robbers," Kalla said at a seminar themed "It is Time to Listen to Conscience" at the Hotel Sahid Jaya here.
Kalla said Bank Century failed because its funds had been robbed and not because there was a financial crisis. Neither would its collapse have had a systemic effect.
He said the Bank Century case was the greatest instance of robbery that had ever taken place in the country because it was now being investigated by three of the country's highest authorities, namely the Supreme Audit Board, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and the House Inquiry Committee.
"Yet, until now, the case has not yet been brought to light," said Kalla who is also former chairman of the Golkar Party.
He said the Bank Century case had hurt the public's sense of justice and the people's outrage was reflected in a drop in the public's trust in the government.
The accumulated public anger could become fatal, Kalla warned and recalled the change of national leadership in 1998 from the New Order to the Reform Order.
He said at the root of the people's anger at the time was their hurt sense of justice and sense of welfare.
"I hope we will not see another reform movement now," he said.
Kalla hoped the House Bank Century Inquiry Committee, currently still investigating the case, could produce a wise decision that accorded with the public's sense of justice.
Former coordinating minister of economic affairs under then President Megawati Soekarnoputri, Rizal Ramli, shared Kalla's view that what had happened with Bank Century was plain robbery.
Ramli asked the new national alliance of political parties to act to help settle the case.
"Will we just remain idle about this case," he said.
Kalla and Ramli spoke at the same function where eight political parties set up a coalition on Friday led by the Hanura (People's Conscience Party) chaired by retired general Wiranto who was the running mate of Jusuf Kalla in the last presidential race that was won by Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and his running mate Boediono.
The eight parties are Hanura, Bulan Bintang, Kebangkitan Nasional Ulama, Damai Sejahtera, Peduli Rakyat Nasional, Demokrasi Bangsa, Matahari Bangsa and Bintang Reformasi.***
