GREENPEACE SUPPORTS COMMUNITY`S REJECTION OF PT.RAPP

Jakarta, Jan 8 (ANTARA) - International environmental NGO, Greenpeace supports the statement of Teluk Meranti community and surrounding villages firmly rejecting the continuation of Semenanjung Kampar forest destruction by PT Riau Andalan Pulp and Paper (RAPP).

Greenpeace is urging the Indonesian government to meet its promise to evaluate the license of PT RAPP and ask it to show a commitment to the environment and respect for the community's rights in Semenanjung Kampar, it said in a statement here Friday.

About the thousand people gathered in Teluk Meranti's football field to show the village resistance is managed by an Asia Pacific Resources International Limited (APRIL) on Thursday (7/1).

The Rejection Declaration was also attended by dozens of residents from four villages around Semenanjung Kampar, namely Kuala Panduk, Teluk Binjai, Muda Island, and Segamai Village who also felt threatened by PT. RAPP's activities in the woods and in their farmland.

"Hundreds of hectares of our agricultural land had been taken forcefully by the company. Many government farming programs that should help the people's economy failed due to RAPP. Now they caused a bigger disaster by taking our forests. On the other hand, the company can not give a proper compensation," said a Teluk Meranti community leader, H.Rusman.

According to Rusman, this declaration was made after the community held several meetings with the PT. RAPP to negotiate a compensation for their forest. But the RAPP did not show heir commitment to respect the community's rights.

PT. RAPP has been accused of being the main perpetrators of destruction of carbon enriched forests in Kampar Peninsula, whereas according to Greenpeace, the Semenanjung Kampar is a place that must be protected to prevent the impact of disasters due to climate change. Forests in this region remained only 400,000 hectares from 700,000 hectares.

"The Government must be responsible for the Semenanjung Kampar public safety and the environment, saving Semenanjung Kampar area will not only give positive impact on efforts to achieve Indonesia's commitment to reducing emissions by 26 percent by 2020 but also gave hope of a better life in Semenanjung Kampar, the demolition operations of the forests by RAPP must be stopped," Maitar Bustar , Greenpeace Southeast Asia forestry campaigner said.

In November and December 2009 Greenpeace had built a Climate Defenders Camp in Semenanjung Kampar to show RAPP's negligence of the law by destroying three meters deep peat land which inspired the people to demand protection of the region's forests and peat lands.

This series of actions to make the Minister of Forestry Zulkifli Hasan to suspend the license of PT. RAPP in Semenanjung Kampar then formed an independent team to investigate violations of the RAPP license.

But Bustar considered that this team failed to accommodate the people's interests and there are indications of PT. RAPP making approaches to this team by facilitating their travel.***
