MAN KILLED IN 5.4 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE IN GARUT
Garut, W Java, Jan 10 (ANTARA) - One man was killed in an earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale which seriously damaged a number of houses in Kampung Baru, Mandalakasih village, Pameungpuk sub-district, on Sunday.
The 65 years old dead victim, Upun, had to undergo two and a half hours of medical observation and treatment at Dr. Slamet Garut General Hospital's Emergency Ward cardiologist, but he eventually succumbed to his serious injuries at 14 p.m ocal time, the hospital's director dr Widjayanti Utoyo said.
The main cause of the man was actually a heart attack, and he was also suffering from gout and high blood pressure. The quake struck at 7.25 a.m, she said.
Meanwhile, two other Mandalakasih villagers who suffered from injuries by falling debris were Suherman (54) and his son, Galih (15) were quickly rushed to a public health center for treatment, the head of the center dr, Nadia said.
The epicenter of the quake was located 84 km southwest of Tasikmalaya, West Java, at a depth of 14 km.
Local subdistrict head Jujun Juhana said although this morning people were no longer panic, but the local administration called them to ramain alert of any aftershocks.
The villagers had also been informed by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency that the quake had no potential to trigger a tsunami.
The BMKG also disclosed that the tremor's epicenter was located 8,02.15 degrees South Latitude and 107.91 degrees East Longitude, 84 km southwest of Tasikmalaya, West Java, at a depth of 14 km, he said.
