BEI INDEX OPENS HIGHER ON SMALL-CAP BUYING

Jakarta, Jan. 11 (ANTARA) - The Composite Stock Price Index (IHSG) at the Indonesian Stock Exchange (BEI) opened 0.87 percent higher, as foreign and local investors actively bought small-cap shares in particular.

The BEI index went up 22.431 points to 2,636.705 points and the LQ-45 index rose 5,4256 or 1.05 percent to 520,478 points.

Alfiansyah, a research analyst of PT Sinarmas Securities, believed the Indonesian stocks would continue to move upward and reach the level of 2,650 points as foreign funds in big amount continued to enter the domestic capital market.

Foreign investors released their dollars and bought the rupiah to purchase domestic shares, he said.

The sound national economic growth encouraged foreign investors to increase their investments in Indonesia which is considered safer than other countries, he said.

"We are optimistic that the domestic market potential is quite big, therefore investors are confident that they will be able to get better profit," he said.

Among top gainers at the BEI were Gudang Garam shares that rose Rp900 to Rp23,555, Bukit Asam shares that went up Rp200 to Rp18,500, Astra Agro Lestari shares that advanced Rp150 to Rp25,400 and Astra International shares that added Rp150 to Rp34,550.

BCA shares climbed Rp75 to Rp3,875, Bank BRI shares increased Rp50 to Rp7,775, Bank Danamon shares that rose Rp50 to Rp4,575 and Telkom shares that strengthened Rp100 to Rp9,450.***
