SEOUL, Jan. 12 (Yonhap) -- A South Korean food company has signed a deal to
export locally grown perilla seeds to Malaysia and Singapore, a state-run food
exporter said Tuesday.
The Korea Agro-Fisheries Trade Corp. said Dubio Co., located 40 kilometers south
of Seoul in Hwaseong, signed a deal with Intermed, a Malaysian health food
company, to export the plant seeds to the two Southeast Asian countries.
It said sales of Dubio processed seed and other oil products may top US$3 million
in the next two years. Perilla seeds can be used to produce olive oil-like
products that go into such foods as salad dressing.
Of all types of plant oil, perilla seeds have the highest concentration of
so-called omega-3 acids. The fatty acid is essential for normal growth of young
children and is reported to be good for lowering cholesterol levels as well as
preventing cancer.
"The new trade pact can help capitalize on rising demand for healthy food
worldwide," the trade corporation said.
It said that the deal may open the door for future exports to other countries as
Intermed has ties with European companies.
