Toray Saehan to expand China production lines for nonwoven fabric

Toray Saehan-China plant

SEOUL, Jan. 12 (Yonhap) -- Toray Saehan Inc., a South Korean-Japanese joint
venture synthetic fiber manufacturer, said Tuesday it will expand its China
production lines for nonwoven fabric.

Nonwoven fabric is a fabric-like material made from long fibers that are bonded
together by chemical, mechanical, heat or solvent treatments. The fabric usually
goes through a process called spunbonding, which involves bonding
continuous-filament synthetic fibers immediately after extrusion.
Toray Saehan plans to invest 65 billion won (US$ million) in expansion of the
facility at its plant in Nantong, located on the northern bank of China's Yangtze
River.
The Nantong factory was launched in Oct. 2008 to supply polyproplylene spunbonded
nonwoven fabric mainly for use in the production of diapers amid rapidly growing
demand in China.
The joint venture has maintained a production capacity of 50,000 tons per year,
including 18,000 tons in Nantong.
Completion of the expansion, which is projected to increase output capacity by
20,000 tons per year, is scheduled for March 2011, the company said.
The company anticipates it will become Asia's largest maker of nonwoven fabric
with an annual production capacity of 88,000 tons when the expansion is complete.

Toray Saehan was set up in 1999 as a joint venture between South Korea's Sanhan
Industries Inc. and Japan's Toray Industries Inc.
