Seoul mulls sending diplomats to Haiti to assist quake-hit S. Koreans
SEOUL, Jan. 13 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's foreign ministry is working to confirm
the safety of South Korean residents and travelers in Haiti, hit by a powerful
earthquake of 7.0 magnitude Wednesday, as nearly a dozen South Koreans, including
a female military officer to a U.N. peacekeeping mission there, remained missing,
a ministry official said.
Nearly 10 other residents or civilian workers remained unheard as of Wednesday
morning (Seoul time), according to the official.
"We are making preparations to send in a diplomat from nearby countries as soon
as any South Korean casualty is confirmed," the official said, asking not to be
identified.
The powerful quake that hit the Caribbean nation was followed by a tsunami and
two aftershocks of 5.9 and 5.5 magnitudes, according to foreign news reports.
