Dr. Khoja: Ministry Does Not Seek To Put Restrictions On Press

Riyadh, January 13, 2010, SPA -- The Minister of Culture and Information, Dr. Abdul-Aziz bin Mohieddin Khoja stressed that the Ministry does not seek to place any restrictions on the local press, but it aims to expand press freedom, urging the press to verify accuracy, to keep away from personal criticism of any official or person, or to downplay the services being provided for all
members of the society.


In a monthly meeting organized by Saudi Journalists Association (SJA) here on
Tuesday, Dr. Khoja looked forward to constructive cooperation of the press and
its personnel on distributing news on the Kingdom's manifestations of progress
and developments and on highlighting the constructive role being played by the
leadership of this blessed country at various local, Arab, Islamic and
international arenas in line with the directives of the Custodian of the Two
Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud, the Crown Prince and the
Second Deputy Premier.


He said that the local press has managed to make a leading position in Arab and
Islamic countries as well as in many countries of the world, expressing his
confidence in Saudi Journalists Association and calling on it to move freely in
its works and activities at local and external arenas, pointing in this regard
to the formation of the Association's Board of Directors fully through election
without appointment of any members by the ministry in accordance with the
regulation.
The Minister of Culture and Information emphasized that the Ministry has been
seeking to develop all its audio-visual sectors as well as highlighted its
interest in the establishment of newspapers.


Dr. Khoja said the ministry is giving all care and attention to the project of
transforming the Radio, the Television and the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) into
general organizations, noting that the ministry has made great strides in this
area and hopes that the project will be completed in the near future to achieve
the high ambitions attached by the ministry to this project aiming at the
development of the Radio, Television and the Saudi Press Agency in all their
activities and future plans.


He indicated that the radio, on its turn, is proceeding ahead on its regular
steps, pointing out that the first license for the private radio / FM / will be
granted on Safar 12th, then a new license will be granted every two weeks until
the completion of the five licenses available for the private sector.


On his part, the Association's President Turki Al-Sudairi commended in his
speech the development of the standards of journalism in the Kingdom of Saudi
Arabia, stressing that Saudi press has made a lot of achievements and
accomplished a qualitative rapid development.
