16 of 40 int'l daytime slots at Haneda to be allotted to China flights+

TOKYO, Jan. 13 Kyodo - Japan envisions allocating 16 of 40 daytime international slots at Tokyo's Haneda airport to direct round-trip flights to China in the hope of luring more Chinese tourists when the airport opens its fourth runway in October, sources
familiar with the matter said Wednesday.

The plan will become official if Beijing accepts Tokyo's proposal at bilateral
aviation talks scheduled to be held by this summer, according to the sources.
With Japan aiming to triple the number of foreign visitors from the 2008 level
to 25 million annually by 2019, regular international flights using Haneda are
expected to play a significant role as the airport is closer to central Tokyo
than Narita airport east of the city.
While Haneda-Bejing charter flights commenced last October, regular daily
round-trip flights to China as well as other countries and territories will
take over the daytime slots at the airport from October this year.
Other international flights during the daytime at Haneda will be limited to
Asian routes in consideration of flights at Narita International Airport in
Chiba Prefecture, the largest international airport in Japan.
The Asian routes will include six round-trip flights to South Korea, four to
Taiwan and two to Hong Kong.
As for nighttime service hours at Haneda from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., there will be
18 international round-trip flights to 11 countries and territories from the
airport, including four flights to the United States and two to Germany.
The share of nighttime slots for Haneda-China routes is expected to be decided
in upcoming negotiations.
Following the opening of the fourth runway, daytime arrival and departure slots
at Haneda will initially be increased by 50, including 10 domestic flights,
while the number will eventually increase by 104.
